420 Stainless Steel Overlay Rolls

420 stainless steel overlay rolls are heat transfer rolls, also referred to as chill or calendar rolls, built with 420 stainless steel cladding to increase corrosion resistance and durability.

420 Stainless Steel Overlay Rolls

Corrosion-resistant rolls for demanding environments.

When corrosion and cleanliness are critical, our 420 stainless steel overlay rolls provide robust heat transfer performance. The high-carbon martensitic stainless steel surface offers hardness around 50 HRC and good corrosion resistance, making it ideal for food contact, chemical processing and high-hygiene applications.

When to choose this roll

  • When your coolant or product is corrosive (e.g., acids, alkalis, cleaning agents).
  • When you require food-grade or hygienic surfaces.
  • When high surface hardness improves wear life.
  • When regulatory compliance (FDA or USDA) necessitates stainless surfaces.
  • When frequent cleaning is part of your process.

How it works

The roll is built from a carbon or alloy steel core for strength and thermal conductivity, then clad with a thick layer of 420 stainless steel via mechanical bonding or welding. This overlay provides a hard, corrosion-resistant exterior while retaining the core’s heat transfer efficiency. The roll can be fabricated as a single-shell or double-shell design with spiral baffles to suit your heating or cooling needs.

Where it pays off / Applications

Food processing equipment, beverage and dairy lines, pharmaceutical and cosmetics production, packaging film lines requiring hygiene, and chemical plants handling aggressive fluids.
